    Why is safeguarding so important in schools?

    Working Together to Safeguard Children, July 2018 states:

    A child centred approach is fundamental to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of every child.

    A child centred approach means keeping the child in focus when making decisions about their lives and working in partnership with them and their families.

    All practitioners should follow the principles of the Children Acts 1989 and 2004 that state that the welfare of children is paramount and that they are best looked after within their families, with their parents playing a full part in their lives, unless compulsory intervention in family life is necessary.

    Children spend half their waking hours in school

    For some children it is the only safe place in their lives.

    School staff may be the first people that children tell about their experiences of abuse at home

    Anyone who has contact with children must know how to RECOGNISE and REFER any concern


    What do we mean by Child Protection and Safeguarding?

    • protecting children from maltreatment
    • preventing impairment of children’s health or development
    • ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
    • taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes

    Disclosures and recording concerns at Paddock Wood Primary

    Green concern forms and body maps are located throughout the school for any staff member to complete should a concern arise.  These forms are given to the DCSLs who will then make the decision whether they believe it is a concern that needs to be escalated or monitored.

    If after discussing the concern with a parent/carer, additional support is required then a referral will be made (with the consent of the parent) via The Integrated Front Door.  The concern will then be assessed by the IFD team as to whether it meets levels 3 or 4. 

    Level 3 support is classified as intensive and the family will receive an Early Help family support worker to do direct work. 

    Level 4 support is classified under Children’s Social Work Services where a social worker will carry out a CAF (Child and Family) assessment to see what support needs to be put in place.

    Our duty of care

    All professionals have a duty to refer cases where abuse is known to have occurred or is suspected.

    No professional has the right or responsibility to withhold information or to respect a child’s/young person’s wish for confidentiality.

    We try to create an environment where:

    •          children can see school as a safe place to be

    •          views and contributions are respected

    •          adults and children are respectful of each other

    •          there is a culture of openness, honesty and trust

    •          all staff allow children to be heard

    •          there is space for privacy

    •          children’s self-esteem is nurtured

    Safer Practice

    All staff at Paddock Wood Primary have been trained on safer practice which includes:

    •          Behaviour that is open and transparent

    •          Adopting high standards of personal conduct

    •         Behaviour in or out of school that doesn’t compromise any position within school

    •          Avoiding being alone with a student behind a closed, windowless door

    •         Never giving an individual student a gift that is not part of the ‘Rewards Policy’

    •         Never giving a personal mobile number or personal e-mail address to a student

    •          Being aware of the dangers of social networking sites

    All staff and any volunteers are DBS checked before they start working for Paddock Wood Primary.
