Paddock Wood Primary School

A school of excellence and enjoyment at the heart of its community

    English

The new curriculum for speaking and listening focuses on developing vocabulary, speculating, hypothesising and exploring ideas to clarify thinking. In reading, we encourage all pupils to read for pleasure and enjoyment at their own level every day, and learners will normally read one-to-one with an adult every day. We have made significant investment in class sets of high-quality children’s novels by well-known and respected authors to set purposeful contexts for children’s writing. Our writing programmes promote and develop structure, strategies, stamina and skills to enable children to write at length, and encourage accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. Developing high quality literacy skills is the key to accessing the whole curriculum.

In Key Stage One, the phonics scheme currently used is Read Write Inc. It provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
